See below for more information on the evolution of the Cardassian "look."
Since scale patterns on Cardassian necks have been shown to change from appearance to appearance (Garak, for example), makeup artist Michael Westmore theorized, in a 2005 issue of Star Trek Insider, that Cardassians continually shed and regrow scales.
This trait earned them the derogatory nickname "spoon heads." Some Cardassians (such as Natima Lang) had another ridged feature, also in the shape of an inverted tear, in the center of their chests, while other members of the species (such as Rekelen) were missing this trait. The ridge was thickest immediately above the eyes, protecting them and creating an especially deep-set appearance. ( TNG: " The Chase")Įxternally, Cardassians were easily recognizable by each having light-gray skin, two thick, vertical neck ridges that receded back to the crown of their head, and an inverted tear-shaped ridge in the center of the forehead. ( DS9: " The Wire", " For the Cause") Like other humanoid species, they evolved in a process influenced by the ancient humanoids. Partially mummified corpse with visible rib cageĬardassians preferred a darker, hotter, and more humid environment than Humans or Bajorans.
